Our school
Since 2006, Southern Cross Academy (SCA) has been providing high-quality,
international primary education in English in the vibrant coastal town of Vilankulo, Mozambique. As a small, secular, and non-profit school, we are deeply rooted
in our local community and proudly serve both Mozambican and international families.
At SCA, we believe education should nurture not only academic achievement,
but also intercultural understanding, creative exploration, environmental responsibility and a strong sense of global citizenship. Our curriculum is enriched with local culture, Portuguese language and themed learning that brings the world into the classroom - and the classroom into the world.

SCA is a proud member of ISASA (the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa), the region’s oldest and largest organization for accredited independent schools.
This affiliation affirms our commitment to educational excellence, ethical leadership, and inclusive values.

Whether your child is beginning their learning journey or transferring from another school, we welcome you to join a diverse, supportive, and forward-thinking community
where every child is seen, heard, and encouraged to thrive.
“[The teachers are} committed and dedicated to the provision of quality teaching and have genuine empathy for the wellbeing of the children.”
- Michael Hosty, IQAA Mentor, February 2020
Headteacher's Welcome

Dear families, friends and future learners,
Welcome to Southern Cross Academy - a school where every child matters and where learning goes hand in hand with curiosity, creativity, and compassion.
As Head Teacher, it is a privilege to lead a team of passionate, experienced educators who believe in nurturing the whole child.
At SCA, our classrooms are places of discovery, where children are encouraged to think critically, express themselves, and grow into confident, thoughtful global citizens.
Our curriculum - grounded in the British National Curriculum and enriched with Mozambican culture and values - reflects our belief that education should inspire, challenge, and empower.
We are proud to be part of the Vilankulo community, and even prouder of our diverse student body, where local and international families come together in a spirit of openness and collaboration. Whether gathered under the acacia trees for outdoor learning, exploring the marine wonders of the Bazaruto archipelago or preparing for a school performance under the stars - our students are learning by doing and learning with joy.

We look forward to welcoming you into our school family.

Governance
At Southern Cross Academy (SCA), we believe that a strong school community
is built on collaboration, trust and shared responsibility.

Our school is governed by a registered Mozambican non-profit association,
Associação Cruz Sul, made up entirely of parents of currently enrolled students.
Each year, at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the beginning of the year, parents elect a Board of Directors to serve as the school’s governing body. This dedicated team of volunteers provides strategic leadership and oversight across key areas including: Long-term planning and development, Financial management, Human resources, Marketing and outreach, and Facilities and operations.
While the day-to-day operations and educational leadership are managed by the administration office and the Head Teacher and teaching team, the Board ensures that the school remains sustainable, accountable and aligned with its mission.
Open and respectful communication between parents and teachers is at the heart of our school culture. Teachers and parents work closely together on all matters relating to each child’s learning and well-being. Broader suggestions or ideas for school improvement are thoughtfully passed on to the Board, ensuring that every family has a voice in shaping SCA’s future.

This governance model reflects the values we teach in our classrooms:
shared leadership, community care, and active participation.
